Create contemporary graphic effects on plain beverage glasses with simple, wide masking tape and a craft knife
Materials: #15-0200 Armour Etch Glass Etching Cream #85-2108 Craft knife #85-2171 sponge brush #08-9999 Gloves Tall beverage glasses 1 inch wide masking tape Directions: 1. Wash glasses in clean, hot soapy dishwater water. Dry well 2. For all the glasses-Cut a strip of masking tape slightly longer than the circumference of the glass. Tear the strip in half lengthwise. Line up the straight edge with the top rim of each glass. Repeat with the bottom rim. Overlap the ends where they meet, trim off any excess. 3. Preparing the striped glasses-Cut strips of masking tape longer than the length of the glass for the vertical stripes and the width for the horizontal stripes. Tear down the sides of the tape to remove the straight edges. If you are having difficulty, lay the strip of tape on bakers parchment paper. Place a small flexible ruler on top of the tape where you want to tear it. Hold it down with one hand and tear with the other hand. Reduce the width of the tape to about 1/2 inch wide. Apply the torn strips to the glass about 1/2 inch apart (see picture) Tear another strip of tape in half. Apply one half to the upper rim of the glass with the smooth edge along the rim. Apply the other half at the bottom with the smooth edge against the bottom rim. 4. Preparing the cubed frosted glass Cut strips of masking tape long enough go around the glass horizontally. Tear down the sides to remove the straight edges, leaving as much as possible so the strip is still close to 1 inch wide (if you want bigger cubes, either overlap two pieces of tape or use wider tape. Rip the strip into 3/4 inch squares. Apply rows of the torn squares to the glass about 3/4 inches apart. Repeat for two more rows so you end up with three alternating rows (see picture). Tear another strip of tape in half. Apply one half to the upper rim of the glass with the smooth edge along the rim. Apply the other half at the bottom with the smooth edge against the bottom rim. 5. Preparing the polka dot glass Cover the entire glass with tape. Cut circles out of the tape in a random pattern using a craft knife. Take the tip of the knife and tear out the circles. 6. For all the glasses Since you have had to handle the glasses a lot while you were preparing them for etching, take a dry paper towel and wipe over the open areas to remove any fingerprints 7. Put on the rubber gloves. Load the brush with Armour Glass Etching cream. PAT the etch cream onto the open areas of the glass (do not brush it on). Cover with a 1/4 inch layer of cream. Leave the cream on for 3 minutes 8.Turn the glass upside down so no water will go inside while rinsing. Rinse off all the etch cream. Remove the tape and rinse again. Optional ideas: 1. Project can be done with 1/2 inch tape #08-9415 Masking tape or wider. Instead of tearing the edges of the tape, allow them to remain smooth 2. Instead of using masking tape, cover entire glass with #31-0401 Beige Vinyl Masking. Cut the stripes, squares and circles out with a craft knife |
