#15-0250 Armour Glass Etching Cream #31-0401 Beige Vinyl Masking #50-0501 Tool Kit 18 x 24 Wall Mirror 2 or 3 inch high Lower case alphabet template- Plastic type is best Paper towels Scrap paper Pencil Washable marker T-square Ruler Old towel Directions: 1.Lay an old towel over your work table. Lay the mirror on the towel. Clean the mirror with the glass cleaner that came in your tool kit. 2. Cover the entire bottom half of the mirror with contact vinyl. Trim off the excess vinyl so there is no overhang onto the frame. You will cover that with masking tape later. 3. Measure the width of the mirror and mark the center point about 6 inches from the bottom. Draw a vertical line on the mark. This is your center line for balancing the letters equally across the bottom of the mirror. 4. Draw a horizontal line all the way across and 1 inch up from the bottom of the mirror. This is the line you will use to line up the bottom edge of the letters on. 5. Write out i love me on a piece of scrap paper. There are 9 letters and spaces in the phrase . Draw a vertical line through the v in love. This is the center letter in the phrase. 6. Take the mylar stencil with the letter V on it and straddle it on the vertical center line with half the letter on the right side of the center line and half to the left. The bottom of the letter should sit on the horizontal line you made all the way across the bottom. Secure with a couple of pieces of masking tape so the stencil does not move while you are tracing it. Trace the v onto the contact vinyl with a pencil. 7. Measure a 1/2 inch space from the v on either side and make a vertical mark with T-square and pencil. Line up the letter e to the right side of the mark and trace. Do the same to the left for the o and l in love. Use your pencil chart as a guide so you have the letters in the right order. 8. Next you have to leave a space to separate love from I and me, so you will measure 1 inch from the last letter and mark with the T-square, the same a s you did for the other letters. Then trace the rest of your letters on the vinyl 9. Carefully cut out the letters with the craft knife that came in your tool kit. Do not press so hard you scratch the mirror. The vinyl cuts easily. Use your T-square to help you with the straight edges of the letters so they cut smoothly and come out straight. Lift the cut pieces out of the vinyl. 10. Place a piece of paper over the cut letters and rub over them with the edge of the T-square. This will secure any edges of the letters that may have lifted when you were removing the cut pieces. 11. Apply masking tape to the frame of the mirror all around the bottom, sides and inside the lip where the mirror meets the frame. You want to cover anywhere the water could get inside the frame. You want to overlap the edges of the masking tape to seal it up. Also apply masking tape where the contact vinyl ends on the mirror. Do not forget to cover the back too. The mirror will be getting wet on the backside when you rinse it off as well. 12. Put gloves on. Using the sponge brush, load with Etch Cream onto the foam brush, fully but not dripping. PAT the cream over each letter until well covered with about 1/4 inch of cream. It is very important that you DO NOT paint the cream on, it will streak. Wait a full 5 minutes, then rinse under running water until all the cream is gone. 13. Place the mirror on an old towel to drain. Pat the mirror dry with paper towels. Remove all the vinyl and tape and dry any remaining water from the mirror. 14. Clean mirror with glass cleaner and paper towels Note: If your wall mirror is smaller than 18x24 or you wish the lettering to be a little smaller and you are not comfortable cutting out your own letters, you can use the Over N Over re-usable upper case 1 inch letters #21-1638 instead of cutting out your own. |
