Valentine’s Day Wine Glass Gel Candle

Pretty gel candles made from ordinary wine glasses for Valentine’s Day, are an easy and fun project to make for home or as a party centerpiece.

Etched with Armour Glass Etching cream, a sea of little hearts float continuously around the words “Happy Valentine’s Day”. Clear wax gel medium is used for the candle, which looks like wine with a floating flame.

Supplies:

Armour Glass Etch Cream
#21-1625 Sparkle Borders- Over N Over stencil
#21-1621 Script Alphabet- Over N Over stencil 3 pk
#21-1624 Party Elements – Over N Over stencil
#08-9606 Brushes
#08-9415 Masking Tape
#15-0315 Glass cleaner
#61-3328 White Rub N Buff
Wine Glass
Gel candle kit
Red Mylar curling ribbon
Valentine chipboard heart
Foam glue dots ¼”
Paper towels
Old bath towel

Directions:

  1. Make a nest with the bath towel to cuddle the wine glass while you apply the stencils.
  2. Clean the wine glass with the glass cleaner
  3. Gently peel the long heart border from 21-1625 stencil sheet and apply to wine glass, lining up top edge of stencil with the rim of the glass. Complete the border around the rest of the glass with the shorter heart border from stencil sheet 21-1624. Overlap edges of the stencils, if there is still a gap between the long stencil strip and the short one, cover gap with a piece of masking tape or fill in with the single heart from the 21-1624 stencil sheet.
  4. Apply the “Happy Valentine’s Day” stencil from sheet 21-1621 directly under the heart border, overlapping edges
  5. Cover all exposed areas of the glass in and around all the stencils with masking tape, overlapping the edges. Entire side of glass should be covered with either stencil or tape except for the stem.
  6. Apply the Armour Etch Cream with a brush to the open areas of the stencil by PATTING it on (not brushing it on like you’re painting) until the design is completely covered. Follow directions that come with the Over N Over stencils.  View the directions and How to Video.  Click HERE

7.       Wait 1-2 minutes. Holding wine glass by the stem, turn glass upside down and rinse under running water. Rinsing glass upside down will insure no water & cream get inside the glass and you will not have to cover the stem with tape.
8.       Remove the stencils and tape completely from the project. Rinse again if needed. Pat dry
9.       Clean with Glass Cleaner and dry completely
10.   Squeeze a small dab of white Rub N Buff on a folded paper towel. Smear over etchings and continue to rub until the white is only on the etching. Work a small area at a time. The Rub n Buff is easiest to remove before it has a chance to dry. If it dries too fast and you cannot get some off, put another tiny dab of RNB on the towel and rub over the spot again. The new wax will help remove the dry wax.

Decorating the Glass:

  1. Set the wick in the wine glass following the Gel kit instructions
  2. Melt gel wax according to package instructions. Add red or pink coloring and/or scent if desired
  3. Pour into glass up to bottom edge of heart border. Try to avoid making bubbles. Set aside and let gel set before decorating the stem.
  4. Cut 6 strips of red mylar curling ribbon 10” long
  5. Place a foam glue dot half way down the stem of the glass. Center it below the etched “Happy Valentine’s Day”
  6. Tie ribbon bundle around stem of glass and knot tightly over foam glue dot (this will keep ribbon from sliding down the stem.
  7. Curl ribbon strips using a scissor, fluff them out at an angle
  8. Place several foam glue dots along knot & ribbon cluster. Press chipboard heart into the foam dots to secure it
